This story gets my vote for best creative use of a robot. Tweety, a pet bird, was rescued from a partially collapsed apartment building by a robot built to disarm bombs.

This occurred in Australia and, you know, I can't imagine US police authorizing the use of one of their robots just to rescue someone's pet. (More's the pity.)
